Here's the next batch of translating.  This one had a
couple of stumpers in it, any suggestions?

56 Agua para lavar el rostro

     Poned en un vaso azumbre y medio de agua que sea de
río. Y echad dentro en ella unos guijarros muy calientes. 
Y como sean resfriados, sacadlos, y poned en el agua dos
maravedís de alcanfor, y dos de atíncar, y dos de
clarimente, y uno de solimán piedra, y dos de albayalde
crudo, y uno de cardenillo, y dos de jibia, y un puño de
pepitas de calabazas y un poco de mirra: todas estas cosas
molidas; y media escudilla de miel cruda. Poned el agua en
un barril, y poned el barril al sol nueve días, y lo
menearéis cada día. Y como sean pasados los nueve días,
habréis hecho vuestra agua.

Water for washing the face
     Put in a vessel an azumbre (1) and a half of river
water.  And put into it some very hot pebbles.  And when
they are cooled, remove them and put in the water two
maravedis of camphor, and two of borrax, and two of
cosmetic water (2), and one of soliman (3)stone, and two of
raw (or coarse) white lead, and one of copper soot, and two
of cuttlefish, and a fist[ful] of gourd seeds and a little
myrrh; all these things ground; and half a bowl of raw
honey.  Put the water in a barrel, and put the barrel in
the sun for nine days, and shake/stir it every day.  And
when the nine days have passed, you will have made your
water.

1: A modern azumbre is approximately 2 liters (1992 Real
Academia dictionary). The 1726 Real Academia dictionary
defines azumbre as 1/8 of an arroba or cantara, which is a
measurement used for wine.

2: clarimente is defined in various dictionaries as "a
certain water that women use as make-up" but I find no
translation for it.

3: soliman is a substance made by combining chlorine and
mercury, now used in medicine as a disinfectant, but again
I find no English translation.


61 Receta para hacer hojaldes

     Mojar la masa con leche de almendras, que sea la más
espesa que pudiéredes, y tiradla como quien hace melcochas,
poniéndole manteca de puerco y azúcar molido, poco a poco,
y mojándola con la leche de almendras. Y habiéndola tirado
bien, y puéstole la leche y azúcar y manteca que bastare,
echa en la masa un poco de aceite de almendras dulze y
juntadlo todo. Y junto, haced las hojaldes sobre obleas. Y
haréis el rostro de la hojalde de azúcar rociada con agua
rosada como mazapán. Y cocedlas en horno sin llama y no muy
fuerte.

Recipe for making puff pastries
     Wet the dough with almond milk, that is the thickest
you can [get/make], and pull it as one who makes honey
toffee, putting [into] it pork lard and ground sugar,
little by little, and wetting it with the almond milk.  And
having pulled it well, and [having] put in the milk and
sugar and lard that is sufficient, put in the dough a
little sweet almond oil and mix it all.  And mixed, make
the pastries over wafers.  And make the face of the pastry
of sugar sprinkled with rose water like marzipan.  And cook
them in [an] oven without flame and not very strong(1).

68 Pomas para oler y confortar

     Cuatro onzas de láudano muy fino, y dos de estoraque
calamita, que sea gomoso; onza y media de menjuí, y una de
lináloe y otra de sándalos cetrinos; media onza de
almizcle, y seis dramas de ámbar, tres dramas de algalia.
Todas estas cosas molidas y polvorizadas juntas en un
almirez caliente y muy pastudas. Formad las pomas con agua
de azahar.

Apples to smell and invigorate/comfort/cheer
     Four ounces of very fine laudanum, and two of Bufo
calamita(1) balsam, which should be sticky; an ounce and a
half of benzoin, and one of aloe and another of
sallow/melancholic sandalwood; half an ounce of musk,and
six drams(2) of amber, three drams of civet [musk].  All
these things ground and reduced to powder together in a hot
mortar and very well ground(?).  Form the apples with
citrus blossom water.

1: calamita: either the tree Bufo calamita or lodestone. 
The 1729 Real Academia dictionary seems to prefer
lodestone, but Bufo calamita makes more sense to me.

2: a guess based on congates.


69 Sebo para las manos

     Sebo de cabrón y de cabrito, partes iguales. Majado en
un mortero y lavado dos o tres veces muy bien.  Enjuagarlo
mucho del agua y ponerlo a remojar en agua almizclada. Se
remojará un día y una noche. Después derretirlo en una
cazuela a muy poca lumbre. Y como sea derretido, colarlo
con un paño; y como sea helado, tornarlo a derretir. Y
poner con ello un poco de aceite de piernas de cabrón. Y
hacerlo panecicos sobre agua almizclada. Y como sean los
panecicos helados, enjuagarlos muy bien del agua y
guardarlos.

Fat for the hands
     Fat/tallow of  billy goat and of kid, [in] equal
parts.  Crush in a mortar and washed two or three times
very well.  Rinse it well of the water and put it to soak
in musk water.  It will soak a day and a night.  Afterwards
melt it in a saucepan over very little fire.  And when it
is melted, strain it with a cloth; and when it is frozen
[i.e. solid], melt it again.  And put with it a little goat
leg oil.  And make it [into] little loaves over musk water.
 And when the loaves are frozen, rinse them very well of
the water and put them away.


70 Medicina para quitar las manchas del rostro

     Tomad una libra de flor de alacrín, y dos ochavas y
media de canela, y otras tantas de nuez moscada, y lo mismo
de macias, y de clavos, y estoraque y anime: de cada una de
estas cosas media onza. Haced todas estas cosas polvos y
juntas con la flor de alacrín. Ponedlo todo en una redoma
de vidrio, y soterrad la redoma debajo de estiércol de
bestias y dejadle el cuello fuera. Estará así soterrada un
mes. Y pasado un mes, sacad la redoma del estiércol. Y
sacad de la flor y lo demás el aceite de la manera que se
sacan los otros aceites. Y si quisiéredes hacer aceite de
la flor de alacrín sola, lo sacaréis de esta manera, salvo
que no le echaréis las especias y lo demás que a esto
echáis.

Medicine to remove stains from the face
     Take  a pound of alacrin (1) flower, and two eighths
and a half of cinnamon, and as much nutmeg, and the same of
mace, and of cloves, and balsam and resin of Hymenaea
courbaril: of each of these things half an ounce.  Make all
these things into powder and [put them] together with the
alacrin flower.  Put it all in a glass flask, and bury the
flask beneath animal dung and leave the neck out.  It will
be thus buried a month.  And the month passed, remove the
flask from the dung.  And remove the oil from the flower
and the rest in the manner that other oils are removed. 
And if you want to make oil of the alacrin flower alone,
you will remove it in this way, except that you won't put
in the spices and the rest that you put in this.

1: I was unable to find a translation or definition of this
term.  Suggestions?


71 Receta para hacer aceite de ámbar

     Tomad almendras dulces blanqueadas y revueltas con
flor de azahar. Ponedlas al sol y cúrense de esta manera:
treinta días poniendo cada día flor de azahar fresca sobre
la que tienen las almendras. Y pasados los treinta días,
sacad el aceite todo junto, y se sacará con agua de azahar.
Después de sacado, ponedlo en una redomica, y poned con
ello ámbar, y almizcle molido y algalia hasta que el aceite
se espese un poco. Y como sea espeso, se curará al sol
cuarenta días.

Recipe for making amber oil
     Take sweet whitened (blanched?) almonds mixed with
citrus blossom[s].  Put them in the sun and cure them in
this way:  thirty days putting each day fresh cirtrus
blossoms over that which the almonds have.  And the thirty
days passed, remove the oil all together, and it will be
removed with citrus blossom water.  Once removed, put it in
a small flask (1), and put with it amber, and ground musk
and civet [musk] until the oil thickens a little.  And when
it is thick, cure it in the sun 40 days.

1: again, I am assuming -ica is the same as -ita or -illa.


72 La manera como se hará faltando el azahar

     Tomad aceite de almendras dulces y agua de azahar por
iguales partes, y ponedlo todo junto al fuego. Y cueza
hasta ser menguada toda el agua, que lo conoceréis ser
menguada de esta manera: haced una torcida y mojadla bien
en el aceite, y encedla; y si rechisbare no está cocido. Y
cocerá hasta que mojada la torcida en él y encendida arda
bien. Y como arda, tornadle a poner otra tanta agua, y
cueza otra vez hasta ser menguada. Y haréis esto tres o
cuatro veces. Y como la hayáis cocido poned en él los
materiales que en el otro y curadlo de la misma manera.

How to make it without citrus blossom[s]
     Take sweet almond oil and citrus blossom water in
equal parts, and put it all together by the fire.  And cook
it until all the water is reduced, which you will know to
be reduced in this way: make a twist and wet it well in the
oil, and light it; and if it sputters (1) it is not cooked.
 And cook it until the wetted twist burns well.  And when
it burns, put in as much water again, and cook it again
until it is reduced.  And do this three or four times.  And
when you have cooked it put in it the materials that are in
the other and cure it if the same way.
