Outside of Europe the practice is an example of a prehistoric
technology. However... . I've also seen numerous European cheese recipes
that refer to wrapping a fresh cheese in various leaves, ranging from
cabbage to nettles and everything in between, for aging. I'd guess that
flatbreads would be one possibility, and another that vendors could
provide a certain number of inexpensive wooden or clay bowls, to be
returned, washed and reused. They didn't wrap Coca-Cola in leaves until
the 1960's, after all.
