I think I may have finally found out what is causing this. And Ras, it
has nothing to do with what fonts the reader has or doesn't have installed
on their end.

The problem is that some (all?) versions of Word will substitute a single
character fraction symbol even when the writer writes a three symbol
fraction. In other words "1/2" composed of three characters gets
automatically translated to the single character. Unfortunately, some
things like the program that translates messages to the digest format
don't know how to handle this strange character.

In Word 97 and later versions you can turn off this automatic substitution
so that it doesn't happen and the three letter fraction stays three
characters. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a way to turn this off
in earlier versions of Word. Personally, I hate it when the software
decides it knows what I want to do more than I do. And I hate it even
more when this "feature" can't be turned off.

Word also seems to change single quotes and double quotes into something
special. You can turn this feature off in some versions of Word, but
again, I haven't found away to turn it off in Word 6.
