Are these Hunting manuscripts directly correlated to a pending banquet, or
may we assume the "thousands" of birds netted were for general consumption,
and an attempt to catch enough to tide the manor house over until the next
hunt? I cannot imagine anyone, medieval or not, serving "thousands" of birds
at a banquet, unless there were "thousands" of attendees...

I believe the "3 ounces of thrush in porre" was meant simply to illustrate
the point that, while the number of dishes served at a banquet were, to our
modern sensibilities, staggering, there is very little direct documentation
to illuminate how "much" of each dish was served.

Mr. Wizard, what happens when you combine pasta and antipasta?
