If you're not in any rush about the research, what might
be available in the records about Pompeii and Herculaneum?
IIRC, one of the tv program about them showed at least one
food merchant stall with large openings for pans and fires
underneath.  Seems to me some of the books about those places
might mention what might have been sold.
