As best I recall the earlier post, Lance implied that he is not an 
experienced fighter, did not propose to use a champion himself, and 
invited his opponent to use a champion. So what he is proposing is 
not that he beat someone else in defense of his princess but that he 
let himself be beaten in defense of his princess. That may be 
unreasonable, but it isn't thuggish.
