During demos I put out spices that are common to medieval Europe and our 
recipes. When I have a spectator, I will explain that saffron is one of the 
rarest spices in the world. I explain that today I pay $2.99 per gram,which 
if converted into medieval dollars is about (based on a reference I do not 
have  any longer, so please forgive me) 100 times that or $300 for the same 
in period.
Wow,  huh!?
