Treacle: an English term for Molasses
"In Britain, on the other hand, tea drinking spread. and with it sugar 
consumption. In 1720 sugar consumption was 8lb a head, but had shot up to 
12lb  by the 1770's.As trade with the West Indies developed , so sugar ceased 
to be a luxury,although many of the poor could  still not afford it. Ordinary 
white sugar candy cost about 61/2d a lb with refined varieties about 2d a lb 
dearer. Treacle, the residue from refining sugar, was much more popular with 
the poorer classes in the North and used to sweeten cakes and biscuits and to 
add to porridge."
