I found a very good recipe. I don't think the combination of ingredients are 
period but it's very tasty.
2 lbs venison (pork can be used)
3 cups water (I used 6 cups)
1 chopped onion
1 sliced parsnip
3 sliced carrots
1/2 rutabaga, peeled & cubed
1/2 cabbage head, cut in chunks
1/2 tsp oregano
1 bay leaf
Brown meat & onions. Add the rest of ingredients and simmer 1-2 hours.
It was an easy one for over an open fire.
