I did a period lunch at an event which included, as I recall, Pies of Paris
and Rapes in Potage for the vegetarians. I believe there may have been some
bread or a few other things, don't remember now. The menu had been posted at
the gate and on the kitchen door since the night before.
I had a lady come up to me and insist that she must have bread, cheese, and
oranges to take to her lord on the fighting field. I told her there was
none. I told her the pie was certainly solid enough to eat with one's hands
if necessary, so there should be no problem. She continued to insist that of
course there must be bread, cheese, and fruit because there is always bread,
cheese, and fruit. And that I must provide it for her. I told her to take
him a piece of pie, and if that did not suit him, they would have to go
off-site to get bread, cheese, and fruit. She dubiously took a large solid
piece of meat pie. I heard nothing further from her, so I have no idea if he
was suited or not.
