Did you really want to know?

*heh*heh*heh*

Canute/Knute/Cnut (whoever you want to spell it) was a Danish king wish
an eye towards expansion. He sailed over and took a sizable chunk of
England for himself in 1014, starting the time known as Danelaw. He and
his family ruled a fair amount of England for several generations- and
when Edward the Confessor (who was a stepson of Cnut) died in 1066,
another of Cnut's line- Harald Hardrada, sailed to England to claim what
he thought was his. Harold Godwinson met him with an army at Stamford
Bridge and managed to kill Hardrada and Godwinson's brother Tostig (who
was being a jerk and fighting for the Other Guy), BUT this left Harold's
troops too pooped to turn around, marchmarchmarch, and beat off the
Normans landing in the south...

And that is the Rest of the Story...
