Now I am desperately confused!  The demerera sugar I saw at the supermarket (well, felt - it was in a little foil pouch) seemed to have much smaller grains than raw sugar.  Also the price was astronomical when compared with the raw stuff.

I think I will do some surfing on this subject and see what I can dig up.

BTW, has anyone on the List ever eaten chilled sugar cane?  I had it in Singapore (or was it Bangkok?  I was only 7 at the time) and it is the most amazingly refreshing thing!  One chews the stalk to release the sweet liquid and then spits out the fibre.  I just wish I could get it in Tassie - perhaps (if I could cope with big flying cockroaches!) it might almost be enough to tempt me to move to Queensland.  Surely, with all the sugar cane grown there this must be available somewhere?
