Was one of my favorite treats when I was a child.  In my part of the South 
(Columbus, Georgia) vendors used to drive through the neighborhoods in 
pick-up trucks with fresh produce for sale.  In high summer, they all carried 
coolers filled with sugar cane cut in sections on ice.  Sure was hard peeling 
that hard skin off, though.
