My spice book--Jill Norman's Complete Book of Spices--shows a small, pink
trumpet shaped flowering plant,a perennial reed, native to west Africa
for Grains. The seeds are small, as the pepper corns are, pyramydal in
shape, related to the cardamom. They are also known as Guinea pepper and
Melegueta pepper. The seeds are white inside, and grind to a fine,
light, aromatic powder.

Pepper trees are native to monsoon forests in India, and the flowers are
replaced with strings of pepper berries.

Still don't know the chemical make-up.
