I had a nasty mundane saffron experience.  A friend of mine
made stuffing for a turkey and put 3 times too much of both
saffron and sage.  Yuck, ick, nasty!  Both are lovely in
reasonable amounts.  What cook in history would not have
adjusted for personal taste?
