 Brighid,

Scully says that there is a town named Nola near Naples. Since de Nola
sometimes uses an Italian word form rather than the Catalan, he thinks
that de Nola was Italian, even though he cooked for King Ferrante, and
his book was published first in Catalan. Some of his recipes derive from
earlier Catalan sources, but there is also a clear Italian influence. He
says that Robert and the author of the Neapolitan Collection may well
have known each other, since they were approximately contemporaries, both
lived in Naples. The 2 books have a few recipes in common. He also says
that the Italian versions of the handful of recipes common to both
collections do not show signs of being translations from the Catalan. He
isn't sure if Robert's original collection was written in Italian or
Catalan. Do you know? He doesn't know if it was written before of after
the Neapolitan, or what the relationship was between the two men. Can
you add anything to that?

How close is de Nola to Sent Sovi? Or De apereylar?

Regards,
Allison, allilyn at juno.com
