To my knowledge this is not a period method, but that does not necessarily
rule it out.  Breads, pies, and other bake goods were produced primarily by
professional bakers who kept their secrets.

For example, there are four European bread recipes of which I know between
600 and 1600.  All of them apparently were written by other than
professional bakers.
