My yeast test method is to put water hot enough that I can
stand it for 3 seconds or so. That way it's warm enough but
not too warm. Of course, your test may not be 3 seconds.
That is how I adapted to not having a thermometer that I can
read. When you're nearly blind, it's hard to find usable
thermometers. That's also why I developed my
thermometer-free soft ball test (all right, I heard that
snickering!) And no, it doesn't involve sharp objects, so
relax.
Before someone asks, put a glass of ice water handy and drip
some candy into the edge of it when you think it may be
done. If it makes a thin, runny stream down the inside,
it's not ready. If it makes a thick stream and/or a soft
ball in the bottom, it's done.
