My yeast test method is to put water hot enough that I can
stand it for 3 seconds or so.  That way it's warm enough but
not too warm.  Of course, your test may not be 3 seconds. 
That is how I adapted to not having a thermometer that I can
read.  When you're nearly blind, it's hard to find usable
thermometers.  That's also why I developed my
thermometer-free soft ball test (all right, I heard that
snickering!)  And no, it doesn't involve sharp objects, so
relax.

Before someone asks, put a glass of ice water handy and drip
some candy into the edge of it when you think it may be
done.  If it makes a thin, runny stream down the inside,
it's not ready.  If it makes a thick stream and/or a soft
ball in the bottom, it's done.
