I think the dinner/supper thing is a holdover from a time when folks lived on
farms.  The large meal of the day (dinner) was served in the middle of the day,
while the smaller meal (supper) was eaten in the evening after all of the work
was finished.  It was probably a healthier way to do things...you get exercise
after eating the larger meal, rather than settling down, as most of us do, to be
a couch potato for the evening.
