SC - manual de mugeres #64-67

Here is the first chunk of Manual de Mugeres that I have
translated.  Since there seem to be three of us working
with this, I started in the middle and plan on working on
the middle third (#48-97) unless someone else wants it.  

A couple of phrases that are new to me:  
"pan de rey": is "king's bread" a particular type of bread?

"unto de gato": is there such a thing as "cat ointment", or
are they really eating cat grease here? (#67)


64   Salsa para cocido y asado

     Cortezas de pan de rey tostadas, almendras mondadas,
pasas sacadas los granos, granadas agrias. Todo bien majado
y desatado con una clara de huevo o caldo que no sea graso.
Pasarlo por un cedazo y echarle canela, y jengibre y un
poco de azúcar. Y cocerla con poca lumbre lo que bastare.

Sauce for stewed or roasted [meat]:
     Toasted crusts of king's bread, shelled almonds,
raisins with seeds removed, sour pomegranates.  All well
ground and loosened/unfastened [dissolved?] with an egg
white or broth that is not fatty.  Pass it through a sieve
and throw into it cinnamon, and ginger and a little sugar. 
And cook it enough with a small fire [or possibly, cook it
with just enough fire, but I think that if that were meant,
the pronoun used would be "la" instead of "lo"].  


65   Receta para hacer hordiate

     Para hacer una escudilla de hordiate tomad tanta
cebada majada y mondada cuanta un puño. Cueza en agua hasta
que se deshaga. Haced tanta leche de almendras cuanta media
escudilla, y juntad con el caldo de pollo de agua según el
médico ordenare. Majad la cebada cocida, y desatadla con la
leche y caldo, y coladla por un lienzo claro. Y colada,
poned con aquel caldo un poco de azúcar. Y cueza conforme a
la voluntad del enfermo: espeso o claro como más lo
quisiere comer.

Recipe for making "hordiate" 
     To make a bowl [I think inquiry is being made into
exactly what "escudilla" may have meant as a measurement?]
of "hordiate" take as much ground and shelled barley as a
fist [i.e. a fistful of barley flour?].  Cook it in water
until it comes apart.  Make as much almond milk as half a
bowl, and unite it with [lit. the broth of chicken/fowl of
water; could be waterfowl broth, could be chicken broth
made with water] as the doctor orders.  Grind the cooked
barley and loosen/unfasten [dissolve?] it with the milk and
broth, and strain it through clear [clean, maybe?] linen. 
And [when] strained, put with that broth a little sugar. 
And cook it as the invalid wants: thick or clear however he
most might want to eat it.


66   Receta para guardar duraznos frescos hasta Navidad

     Coged los duraznos medio maduros con su pezón, de
manera que los duraznos no se lastimen. Y ponedlos en un
vaso, el pezón arriba de manera que no estén apretados. Y
ponedles miel hasta cubrirlos. Y poned este vaso debajo de
tierra y cubridlo con otro vaso. Y tapad las hendeduras de
los vasos muy bien con yeso, de manera que no entre aire. Y
dejadlos estar hasta el tiempo que quisiéredes. Y cuando
los sacáredes saldrán como si los cojésedes entonces del
árbol.

Recipe for keeping fresh peaches and apricots until
Christmas
     Take half ripe peaches/apricots with their stems, in a
way that the peaches/apricots are not damaged.  And put
them in a vessel ["vaso" usually refers to a drinking
glass, but can have a broader meaning which seems more apt
in this context], the stem upward in a way that they are
not tight.  And cover them with honey.  And put this vessel
under earth and cover it with another vessel.  And cover
[seal?] the cracks of the vessels well with gypsum/plaster
in a way that air does not enter.  And let them be until
the time you want.  And when you take them out they will
come out as if you harvested them from the tree.


67   Remedio para el asma

     Guisar huevos con unto de gato, y darlos al que fuere
enfermo de el asma. Y todo lo que se hubiere de guisar con
manteca, guisarlo con este unto. Es muy buen remedio para
el asma.

Remedy for asthma
     Cook eggs with cat grease [or possibly ointment?], and
give them to whoever is sick with asthma.  And all that
there is to cook with butter, cook it with this grease.  It
is a very good remedy for asthma.
