I agree - when I was young, my grandfather tried to get me to eat some
carob mock-chocolate candy, and it was horrible.

However, I have since had carob in things that didn't pretend to be
chocolate, and found it to be very good.  I had it mixed into whipped
cream once at an event.  The lady who made it said it was documentable,
but I don't know what her source was.  I haven't been very impressed
with some of her "sources".  She served it with pears in wine sauce. 
mmmmmm...
