Since it was imported by the merchants--probably Hanseatic League--that
imported the other spices.  Rice was grown by then around the
Mediterranean, although I forget wihich sources have that info, but there
aren't a lot of rice paddies in Cologne.  ;-)  They may have also meant
rice flour, although I believe that was prepared, as needed, from the
whole rice stores.
