About 4 years ago I read a medical study on the effects of wormwood - I
don't remember the specifics (it was a bit too technical for me to do that)
but it was a study on the degeneration of the brain and nervous system
resulting from the ingestion of wormwood. It was pretty scary reading but
was the results of long term use/abuse.
For some strange reason, absinthe has currently been undergoing a resurge in
popularity in the last year and is now a 'trendy' drink in the UK. Several
countries in Europe make it and it is being imported wholesale to England.
It's quite expensive - about £25 - 40 per bottle.
I tried some, and whilst I thought the color was gorgeous, the aniseed taste
was revolting. Of course, I loathe aniseed, so there's a basic flaw in the
Taste Test here! ;-) I gave the rest of the bottle to an aniseed-loving
friend who said it was lovely but very very strong.
An ex also just gave me a more expensive bottle of the stuff, which I
haven't tried yet (you gotta wonder about gifts like that - I have few
strong food dislikes so why didn't he remember that one? :-p) and it's still
sitting in my freezer (along with the grappa and limoncello . I shall report
back when I finally pluck up the courage!
