Hardier varieties of the Chinese Gooseberry that survive northern winters 
have small fruit to an inch long. These plants while not exactly the same as 
the wild species come close to early varieties so far as size and flavor of 
the fruit, IIRC.
It is correct that they were renamed kiwi fruit to aid in marketing the fruit.
