I always consider most of what I read about the pilgims in school texts
to be a lot of hooey. IIRC, in the mid 80s a great scandal was caused by
Yankee magazine printing a transcript of a diary written by one of our
pigrim founders, and it discussed among other things that if they had
not found and stole by diggin up without permission the caches of corn,
beans and dried fish that the locals planted they wold have starved to
death. They had taverns and prostitutes with legalized prostitution [as
long as they plied their trade where they were supposed to there was no
problem , sort of Its a business doing pleasure with you?;-) ] and they
traded english stuff that was essentially worthless for meat and other
foodstuff from the indians, as well as ambushing hunting and gardening
parties. Sounds to me like they ate veggies.

I seem to remember that Plymouth Plantation has a fair amount of
research available on the lifestyles of our idiot forebearers [and I
have to include my family, 3 of 4 grandparent-sides in this group, both
english and dutch]
