The quote is about people eating tomatoes in Italy fried in oil. Jan
Longone, in an article, cites it as early evidence of the eating of
tomatoes, and gives the date as 1544. I was conjecturing that, since
Matteoli's book of 1544 is supposed to be the first written reference
to tomatoes in Europe, it was likely that the quote was from it, but
since I don't have the Longone article readily available I can't
check if that was the source.
