Custard Trifle.
We always have a traditional English Xmas dinner (despite the fact we're in
nice sunny NZ) and the traditional meal on Boxing Day is cold meat leftovers
and custard trifle - basically stale sponge soaked overnight in sherry,
topped with a layer of fresh fruits - apples, strawberries, peaches,
cherries etc and then covered in homemade custard. I find it odd to eat it
any other time of the year because it has such a strong association with
Boxing Day for me. Why this is eaten then I'm not sure but my mother did
tell me (possibly apocryphlly) that it was called Boxing Day because good
Christians 'boxed up' their Christmas leftovers and distributed them amongst
the poor.
