You might have an argument for the Punch&Judy/fabliaux idea, but I can
top that-

Ralph Kramden, Fred Flintsone, and Roseanne's TV husband (Dan Conner? I
forget the name) has pretty clear antecedents in Chaucer's Miller- the
loudmouth lout who drinks too much, passes gas at inopportune times and
has lower-class habits (Kramden and Flintstone bowl- the Miller plays
the pipes). Next time you read the General Prologue, insert a mental
picture of one of these guys, and see if the Miller makes more sense.
