Interesting. Is this a referance to the "Pilgrims" using bread trenchers?

I thought by this time the nobility had shifted towards using wooden
trenchers. The "Pilgrims" don't seem noble but rather middle class.
Perhaps the use of trenchers was moving down the class lines?
