Actually, Patrick was Romanized Celt or Briton rather than English.  The
whole Anglo-Saxon business occurred a few years later.

And as for Scotland the Brave, one must remember the Scotii (wonder if I
spelled that right) were a bunch of Irish pirates who moved in on the Picts
about the same time Julius Caesar moved in on the Britons.
