It has been established that at some point in the twentieth century,
it was believed that people several hundred years earlier didn't eat
tomatoes because they thought they were poisonous.
There are also some bits of evidence that some people in the
sixteenth and seventeenth century thought tomatoes were bad for you
(Matteoli renaming it "malus insana" and Gerard's comments), but knew
that people ate them and didn't drop dead as a result.
