Bernhardus Varenius, Descriptio regni Japoniae [Description of the
Japanese empire], AMsterdam 1649, has a chapter on food and drink. Among
other things he mentions different kinds of preparing rice, he describes
what they did or did not eat, their drinking tea, etc.

He used older travelogues and reports of the Jesuits, some from the 16th
century, e.g. Maffeus and Xaverius.

There are other chapters with interesting details on household stuff ...

The German translation has some useful notes and references that, among
other things, lead to 16th century documents and to this bibliography:
- -- Henri Cordier: Bibliotheca Japonica. Dictionnaire bibliographique des
ouvrages relatifs à l'Empire Japonais rangés par ordre chronologique
jusqu'a 1870. Paris 1912. (Reprint Hildesheim 1992.)
