Yup. PA Dutchland is the last surviving home of gloppy combinations of
sweet (raisins as well as carrots) with bitter (vinegar, cabbage) and
other such combinations. 

Many people I know put a little sugar in their coleslaw, but the mere
presence of sugar doesn't make it register to the tastebuds as 'sweet'.
