    Those are what you hold on to while you start your prayers for a safe
trip.  Generally there is a bit of precariousness felt,  the parishoner
grabs onto the bar, and starts the prayer:  "  OH  JESUS!! . . . ."

    Caointiarn,  kitchen wench,    former convent kitchen girl . . . .who
has just such a bar in her own carriage  (on the passenger's side . . . .)
