SC - Footnotes

I'd like to throw out a general question to the list on the philosophy of 
footnotes.  What kinds of explanatory footnotes do you look for in a 
translated work?  Do you think that any potentially unfamiliar terms 
should be footnoted, or only the really obscure ones?  Are too many 
footnotes a nuisance?

I would appreciate hearing what people think about this, since the 
purpose of footnotes, IMO, is to make the work more understandable 
and accessible to its readers.
