"Meal" (which  is associated with "mull") is from the Latin "molere" to 
grind,  and the Greek "myle" to mill.  

Searching the dictionary again, I found a verb-intransitive definition of 
"mull" I had not seen previously.  It says:

    [Origin unknown]

    First appeared 1618

    To heat, sweeten and flavor (as wine or cider) with spices.

I'm guessing that this 1618 appearance of the word is the quote Elizabeth 
detailed in her post.... :-)
