OK, I give up.  Anybody know what "bolastica" is (#104)?

102 Polvos para limpiar y encarnar los dientes

     Tomaréis coral rojo, y venera de mar y tierra sellada,
de cada cosa de estas peso de medio real; y de aljófar,
peso de un real; y de espuma de mar, peso de real y medio.
Hechas todas estas cosas polvos. Después de haveros
limpiado con otros polvos los dientes, mojar un paño de
lino delgado en vino blanco tibio, y untado en estos
polvos, traereislo muy mansamente por los dientes y no os
enjuagaréis la boca.

Powder for cleaning and healing the teeth
     Take red coral, and ocean scallop shell? [1] and
stamped earth[2], of each of these things the weight of
half a real [3]; and of pearl, the weight of a real; and of
sea foam, the weight of a real and a half.  All of these
things made into powder.  After having cleaned your teeth
with another powder, wet a fine linen cloth in warm white
wine, and smeared in this powder, bring it gently along the
teeth and don't rinse your mouth.

1: a semicircular shell with two valves, one flat and the
other very convex, 10-12 cm. in diameter, reddish outside
and white inside according to the Dictionary of the Real
Academia.

2: A type of earth supposed to be good against poison.

3: lit. royal.  There were once 8 reales to a peseta.  I
think this is calling for a coin with a value of half a
real, rather than half a one-real coin, but this is a
guess.  They may be the same thing, anyway.


103 Sebo para las manos

     Dos riñonadas de cabrón y una de carnero, hecho todo
pedaços. Ponerlo a remojar en agua nueve días, mudarle cada
día el agua. Después lavarlo muy bien, y muy apurado del
agua, derretirlo en una olla vidriada y echarle al derretir
un poco de zumo de limas. Y después colarlo, y hacer los
panes en sus escudillas sobre zumo de limas. Y después de
helado, hechos pedaços los panes, tornadlos a derretir en
un vaso de plata o de vidrio. Y poner con él aceite de
olor, cual quisiéredes y la cantidad que quisiéredes, y
hazed luego vuestros panecicos.

Fat for the hands
     Two goat loins and one of mutton, all made [into]
pieces.  Put it to soak in water nine days, moving [i.e.
stirring] the water each day.  Afterwards wash it very well
and thoroughly drained, melt it in a glazed pot and put in
a little lime juice as it melts.  And afterwards strain it,
and make the loaves in their bowls over lime juice.  And
after it has congealed, the loaves made [into] pieces, melt
them again in a glass of silver or of glass.  And put with
it scented oil, which[ever] you would and the quantity you
would, and then make your little loaves.



104 Lavatorio para las encías

     Tres onzas de agua de llantén y otras tres de agua
rosada; zumo de llantén, dos onzas; bolástica, peso de real
y medio; hojas de oliva, peso de dos reales; manzana de
aciprés peso de real y medio; de grasa y almáciga molido y
puesto en liga dura, de cada cosa a peso de un real;
vinagre rosado onza y media; mirra, peso de dos reales.
Todas estas cosas molidas y puestas en una olla en diez
onzas de vino tinto. Cueza hasta que mengüe la cuarta
parte, y como sea cocido, colarlo; y enjuagarse la boca con
ello.

Wash for the gums
     Three ounces of plantain water and another three of
rose water; plantain juice, two ounces; bolastica [1],
[the] weight of a real and a half [2]; olive leaves, [the]
weight of two reales; cypress apple [the] weight of a real
and a half; of fat and ground mastic put in hard birdlime?
[3], of each thing to [the] weight of a real; pink/rose
vinegar [an] ounce and a half; myrrh, [the] weight of two
reales.  All these things ground and put in a pot in ten
ounces of red wine.  Cook until it is reduced by a quarter
part, and when it is cooked, strain it; and rinse your
mouth with it.

1: Can't find anything on what this might be.  Help?

2: lit. royal.  There were once 8 reales to a peseta.

3: depending on where you look "liga dura" could be
translated as "hard elastic band" or "hard birdlime" or
even "hard mixture".  I suspect, however, that this should
be one word, ligadura (bond or tie, ligature); the idea may
be ground mastic held together with fat.  


105 Pelador para pelar el vello

     Una cuarta de trementina, media onza de cera nueva,
una onza de almáciga. Ponerlo todo en una olla al fuego y
dé dos o tres hervores, que se derrita todo. Cuélenlo por
un paño delgado en una bacía de agua limpia. Y antes que se
acabe de helar, hacer los panecicos.

Wax for removing hair
     A quart of turpentine, half an ounze of new wax, an
ounce of mastic.  Put it all in a pot on the fire and give
[it] two or three boilings, that all be melted.  Strain it
through a thin cloth in a basin of clean water.  And before
it finishes congealing, make the little loaves.


126 Receta para hacer conserva de alhajú

     Amasar harina muy cernida y con aceite y agua. Y dejar
la masa algo dura y sobarla mucho. Y hecha tortas delgadas
cocerlas mucho, que se puedan moler; y molerlas y
cernerlas. Y luego tomar un celemín de nuezes mondadas y
muy limpias, y dos libras de almendras mondadas y tostadas.
Y entremajadas las nueces y almendras, juntarlas. Poner un
azumbre de miel al fuego bien medida, y la mejor que
halláredes, espumarla y tornarla al fuego. Y cuando suba la
miel, echar las nueces y almendras dentro. Y cuezan hasta
que esté la miel cocida. Y como lo esté, quitarlo del fuego
y poner con ello medio celemín raído de aquella harina de
las tortas, y menearlo mucho. Y luego échenle media onza de
clavos y otra media de canela, y dos nuezes de especias,
molido todo. Y tórnenlo a mecer mucho. Y luego háganlo
tortas o pónganlo en caxas, como quisieren más.

Recipe for making preserves of alaju[1]
     Knead well-sifted flour and with oil and water.  And
leave the dough rather hard and work [2] it much.  And thin
cakes made, cook them well, so that they can be ground; and
grind them and sift them.  And then take a celemin [3] of
shelled and very clean walnuts, and two pounds of shelled
and toasted almonds.  And the walnuts and almonds partially
ground [4], mix them.  Put an azumbre [5] of honey on a
well measured fire, and the best you can find, skim it and
return it to the fire.  And when the honey rises/climbs,
put the walnuts and almonds in.  And cook until the honey
is cooked.  And when it is, remove it from the fire and put
with it half a scraped/worn celemin of that flour of the
cakes, and shake it well.  And then put in half an ounce of
cloves and another half of cinnamon, and two nuts of spices
[6], all ground.  And rock/swing it well again.  And then
make it [into] cakes or put it in boxes, as you prefer.

1: The 1992 dictionary of the Real Academia gives this
definition of alaju: a paste of almonds, walnuts, sometime
pine nuts, toasted bread crumbs, fine spices, and
well-cooked honey.

2: lit.: thrash, fondle.

3: a dry measure of 4.6 liters

4: a guess based on the pattern followed by similar words.

5: A modern azumbre is approximately 2 liters (1992 Real
Academia dictionary). The 1726 Real Academia dictionary
defines azumbre as 1/8 of an arroba or cantara, which is a
measurement used for wine.

6: I think "nut" is being used as a measurement here, but
it may be referring to nutmegs.


128 Receta para hacer tortas de pechugas de gallinas

     Dos pechugas de gallina cocidas y majadas, una libra
de almendras mondadas y majadas, y media libra de azúcar;
un poco de queso de Mallorca, agua rosada la que fuere
menester, doce claras de huevos muy batidas, un poco de
jengibre, un poco de sal. Todo revuelto, puesto en una
sartén y cubierta y puesta al fuego. Cuando estuviere medio
cocida, apartarla y rociarla con agua rosada. Y
polvorizarla con azúcar molido, y vuelva después a acabar
de cozer.

Recipe for making cakes of chicken breasts
     Two cooked and ground chicken breasts, a pound of
shelled and ground almonds, and half a pound of sugar; a
little Majorca cheese, the appropriate amount of rose
water, twelve well-beaten egg whites, a little ginger, a
little salt.  All mixed, put in a frying pan and covered
and put on the fire.  When it is half cooked, remove it and
sprinkle it with rose water.  And dust it with ground
sugar, and return it afterwards to finish cooking.
