Sicily?

Hmm.

Sicily is right at the nexxus of things Mediterranean- there's influence
from Italy (and don't forget folks, in period Sicily is not just the
island but a fair chunk of the 'boot' of Italy too) some from Southern
France, a fair amount from Spain, some from North Africa, and even some
from Greece and the Middle East. It was one of the few places where the
Jews were not only safe but a significant portion of the culture.

Start with Mediterranean food- olive oil, basil, fresh veggies, goat
cheese (but no tomatoes or peppers!) and go from there. Any of the
cookbook suggestions made already would be good places to start- I would
also add Redon's _The Medieval Kitchen_, as it has Italian recipes in it
as well as French and the occasisional oddball. Give it a look.

Sicily is a very interesting place- if I had to start all over again, I
might consider it for a home for a persona.
