Some things are in-jokes, and some are probably shorthand references
to stuff that comes up often. Like specialty ingredients and names of
period cookbooks.

Well, there are a bunch of us who are working on various translation
projects. And when we run into snags, it's helpful to consult the
collective wisdom of the list. So there's been more foreign language
stuff posted lately than there generally is. But the majority of the recipe
discussions center around ones that are in/have been translated into
English. You don't need to be a polyglot to participate.

Personally, I tend to get quiet in discussions about the practical end of
running feasts, since I have only done a few. And I'm not a gardener or
a butcher, or a brewer, so usually don't participate in those threads
either. But I read them and learn from them.

Think of it as immersion training. :-)

Good guess! An event centered around classes. In some areas, they
are called scholas or universities.

The Florilegium (aka the Flori-thingy) is a website located at
http://www.florilegium.org. It is the brainchild of Lord Stefan li Rous, a
member of this list. It is a huuuuuge wonderful archive of messages
from many different SCA lists and the Rialto (rec.org.sca -- the SCA
Usenet newsgroup), sorted by subject. Bookmark it -- you will want to
consult it often.

You're smart enough to ask intelligent questions about things you don't
know -- that puts you lightyears ahead of many people. And I guarantee
you that there are lurkers out there who are grateful that you *did* ask.
Keep asking questions. If you really want to, you can email someone
privately.
