Being derived from "autos" meaning "self" and from "krates" meaning "ruler"
which is derived from "kratos" meaning strength or power. Ergo "autocrat"
should mean "self ruler." When the words are joined in Greek, "autokrates,"
the meaning shifts slightly to "ruling by one's self" or "sole ruler."
Since the English "autocrat" is linearly derived from the Greek via Old
French, the English meaning is essentially "despot."
