Two years ago, my friend's mother forgot to buy her shank bone, so she
substituted a dog biscuit at the last minute...  Some of those are
vegetarian!  Or, you could make a peanut-butter cookie with a dog-bone
cookie cutter.

I've also heard of people using root vegetables, since they're bone-like
- - maybe a daikon, or a parsnip.
