Wild ferrets are a pest in New Zealand, partly because they eat 
native species which aren't evolved to cope with mammalian 
predators, and partly because they spread bovine tuberculosis.

While many ferrets doubtless couldn't cope in the wild, it is not true 
that domestic ferrets in general cannot do so -- rather like the case 
with cats...
