Celery is period therefore I assume celery seeds were also in existence. :-) 
It was much used as a medicinal (e.g., diuretic). Cutting celery is often  
used when  recipes from Apicius and  someother sources call for celery. 
Cutting celery  has hollow stems  is smaller than regular celery and has a 
stronger flavor.
