Thank you for this info. It once again shows that  one of the  main problems 
with modern  folks recreating the  medieval period is  a lack of insight into 
what exactly an 'agricultural' society was all about. Many varieties of 
fruits and vegetables and other useful plants have been lost over the past 
feew centuries. Some have survived. But in the main, gardeners have a paltry 
amount of diversity to choose from in the current middle ages compared to our 
medieval forefathers.
