Why in the world would anyone do this???  How did it start?

As for cranberries, am I to understand you folks don't have fresh 
cranberries down there?  Have you ever had candied cranberries?  Cripes if 
it didn't take three months for a packet to get down there I'd send you 
some!  hmmmmm....I wonder how to speed up the mail....
