Hi folks, sorry to be away so long.

I introduced fighter-ade here in Atlantia about 15 years ago, back when I
was a chirurgeon. There are fighters around the kingdom who still swear by
it. We kept 70 fighters in action during a 104-degree Assessment battle one
year using fighter-ade and the fighters were able to eat the evening's feast
and didn't get hangovers the following day - and we didn't have a single
fighter go down with heat exhaustion during the battles. It does rehydrate
and replace spent electrolytes. It is made from period ingredients. The
recipe follows.

While I will spare you my thoughts on Gatorade and other such products, I
will point out that Gatorade was developed for the sports program at a major
college football powerhouse, to keep the college players on the field for an
entire game, even after they should have bonked.

Carbonated beverages are usually high in sugar, which increases thirst. The
body has to blow off the carbon dioxide, which raises core body temperature.
Drinks with caffeine have a diuretic effect, causing increased fluid loss.
This is why carbonated drinks (even clear ones) are discouraged for
rehydration during heavy exercise.

What hot, sweaty folks need most is water, and enough electrolytes to
replace what has been released from fatty storage and depleted by the body.
The juice of a large orange offers more than enough electrolytes for this
purpose. Please consider trying this recipe:

1 quart of cool water
the juice of one orange (preferred)
OR 1/4 to 1/3 cup of premium orange juice, not from concentrate
(acceptable)
about 1 tablespoon of honey

Dissolve the honey in the water and add the orange juice. Make as much as
you need to get through the day (1-2 gallons per person), in these
proportions, and drink plenty before, during and after your exercise. It
isn't particularly sweet or orange-flavored, but it gives you what you need.

Regards,
Thomas Longshanks
