There is a really interesting one in Dining with William Shakespeare which I
want to recreate.  I think (from memory) it is 15th/16th century.  It is
basically a square block of wood which looks to be a few inches deep.  There
is one big hollow in the centre for food and a second, smaller, hollow in
the top right-hand corner for salt.  I really want a couple of them.
