I can't quite shake loose the feeling that 'jack'
might have been the Middle English equivalent of
'thingamajig', given just how many things I've
heard it describe (tankards made of leather,
nonmetallic brigantine armor, a wooden block to
support stuff, a sailmakers tool...)
