Twelfth Night cakes recipes and history in England are described
in Bridget Ann Henisch's Cakes and Characters. An English
Christmas Tradition. Prospect Books, 1984. ISBN:0-907325-21-1.

You'll have to interlibrary loan it. It's been OP for years.
The recipe section found that while they had all the parts of
what was needed for a proper 12th Night Cake in the 17th century,
the cake, the icing, and the marzipan, the trio hadn't been put
together yet.
