>> When people were answering the "Are You a Crazy SCA Cook" quiz, it seemed
to me that quite a few people said that their mums couldn't make a pie crust
to save their lives. Is it then true that many of us come from non-cooking
families, or not-such-great-cooks families? My own mother was a perfectly
competent cook, and a good baker, but couldn't make a pie crust TSHL... HER
mother, on the other hand, was one of those read-thru-it strudel-makers...
Devra the Baker

Maybe it's one of those skipped generation genes, kinda like twins? <grin>
My mother is a good baker (her Christmas cake is divine) but strictly a
'utility' cook - she's OK (as long as she doesn't attempt tripe <shudder of
remembrance>) but only does it because food is necessary. I've never seen my
dad bake anything other than souffle, but he's a brilliant cook who very
much enjoys creating food.

However despite the fact I come from a two-cook family, I didn't really
learn to cook (other than pasta sauce, grilled chicken and coddled eggs -
the boiled eggs took a bit longer) until I was about 21 and living on my
own. I subconsciously picked up stuff from watching/listening to my dad, but
didn't really get taught to cook by either of them other than the usual
'when the bacon turns brown, turn it over' type instructions. Oddly enough,
my dad started giving me cooking lessons when I left home (by which I mean
explaining the reasons for doing stuff, and the scientific basis, rather
than just step by step procedures). So yes, I come from a cooking family,
but I wasn't brought up to cook.

Ciao
